Montecarlo DOC

The outstanding wine appellation 30 minutes from Versilia. A unique microclimate permits both native Italian grapes and international varieties (Syrah, Chardonnay) unusual for Tuscany. Produce both white (Trebbiano-based, crisp and floral) and red wines (Sangiovese-led, supple and food-friendly).

Colline Lucchesi DOC

Rolling hills around Lucca producing elegant Sangiovese-based reds and fresh Vermentino whites. Often overshadowed by more famous Tuscan appellations but beloved by connoisseurs for their restraint and food-friendliness.

Getting There

Montecarlo village is 30 minutes from Forte dei Marmi by car (SS436 towards Lucca). The hilltop village itself is worth exploring — medieval walls, a Renaissance fortress and excellent local restaurants. Combine with a visit to Lucca (15 minutes further).

When to Visit

Wine tourism is best April–October. Harvest (vendemmia) in September is spectacular — many estates welcome visitors to participate. Book cellar tours well in advance in July and August. Most estates close on Sunday afternoons and Monday.
