Monte Forato — Via the Natural Arch

Monte Forato is the Apuan Alps' most extraordinary and most photographed summit — and its name tells you exactly why: forato means "pierced" in Italian. The mountain is formed by two peaks of almost identical height connected by a spectacular natural arch carved through the marble by thousands of years of water erosion. The arch is enormous — over 30 metres wide — and from the Garfagnana side, visible from miles away as a perfect rectangular frame of sky in the mountain wall. The classic route from Stazzema is a circular hike of approximately 9.8 kilometres, with 830 metres of elevation gain — respectable but not extreme, making this the perfect introduction to Apuan Alps hiking. The path rises steadily through chestnut and beech forests before breaking out above the treeline onto the white marble karst landscape that characterises the Apuan summits. The views open dramatically as you gain height: the entire Versilian coast below, the Ligurian Sea extending to Corsica on clear days, and the chaotic tumble of Apuan peaks in every other direction. The natural arch itself is reached after approximately 2 hours — and the experience of walking through it, with the two seas visible simultaneously on either side, is genuinely extraordinary. Local legend says the arch was created by the devil, defeated by a local saint who threw a stone through the mountain. The summer solstice (June 21) creates one of the most remarkable natural spectacles in Italy: the setting sun aligns perfectly with the arch, shooting a beam of golden light through the opening and across the valley.
