Monte Croce — Apuan Ridge Walk

Monte Croce is the most accessible of the Apuan summits with panoramic sea views — a compact hike of 7.5 kilometres that delivers extraordinary rewards for relatively modest effort. The summit at 1,054 metres sits on the main Apuan ridge, with views extending from the Versilian coast (directly below, 1,000 metres down) to the Garfagnana valley and the Apennine chain beyond. The route climbs steadily through chestnut and beech woodland before breaking above the treeline for the final approach along a rocky ridge. The path is clearly waymarked throughout (CAI trail 5 and 6) and the gradients are sustained but never extreme. The summit is large enough to picnic comfortably and offers one of the finest coastline views in the Apuan range. This trail is an excellent first Apuan Alps hike for visitors who want to experience the mountains without committing to the full Pania della Croce challenge.
