Monte Altissimo — Marble Summit

Monte Altissimo has an extraordinary claim to history: Michelangelo personally chose marble from this mountain for the façade of San Lorenzo in Florence. The Fantiscritti quarries just below the summit have been cutting marble continuously since 1497 — the same stone that forms Michelangelo's Moses, the Pietà, and the unfinished New Sacristy. The route from the Rifugio Alpe della Grotta follows a clear mountain path across one of the most extraordinary high-altitude marble landscapes in the Apuan Alps. The upper sections are a white karst plateau — entirely barren marble, like walking on the moon, with the entire Versilian coast spread 1,500 metres below. The summit at 1,589 metres offers one of the finest panoramas in the range: the Ligurian coast to La Spezia, Corsica on clear days, and the dramatic switchback marble quarry roads carved into the mountainside below.
