Orto Botanico Apuano — Botanical Garden Trail

The Orto Botanico Apuano at Pian della Fioba sits at 900 metres in the Apuan Alps and specialises in the extraordinary endemic flora of the marble mountains — plants found nowhere else on earth, adapted to the extraordinary chemistry of the pure marble substrate. Over 300 species are cultivated here, including many Apuan endemics discovered by 19th-century botanists who found entirely new plant species on these marble peaks. The garden trail is completely accessible (flat, paved paths within the botanical garden, short walk to the garden entrance) and spectacular in spring when the rare alpine orchids, endemic bellflowers, and marble-adapted succulents flower in sequence from April through June. The surrounding Pian della Fioba upland plateau offers excellent short walks with views. This is Versilia's most accessible mountain day out — suitable for young families, elderly visitors, and anyone who wants Apuan Alps scenery without a strenuous hike.
