Italy's Most Underrated Coastal City

Viareggio is Versilia's most complete city — a place that functions and thrives year-round, not just in summer. It has Italy's finest concentration of Liberty (Art Nouveau) architecture, one of the country's great fishing ports, the best seafood restaurants in the region, and the legendary Viareggio Carnival — the world's most sophisticated float parade.

Where Forte dei Marmi is exclusive and restrained, Viareggio is democratic and exuberant. It has always welcomed everyone.

The Liberty Promenade

The Passeggiata a Mare — Viareggio's famous seafront promenade — is lined with extraordinary Liberty-style buildings from the early 20th century. The Gran Caffè Margherita, Bagno Balena, and the Kursaal were designed by Alfredo Belluomini and Galileo Chini, whose ceramic work can be seen in the ornate tile facades that line the promenade.

Morning ritual: Walk the entire promenade from north to south (about 40 minutes) in the early morning, stopping for a cornetto and cappuccino at one of the historic caffès facing the sea. This is how Viareggio has begun its mornings for 100 years.

The Port & Fish Market

The working fishing port — Darsena — is the economic and cultural heart of Viareggio. The morning fish auction begins at 5am, but the public market opens at 7am. Buy live sea urchins for €1 each and eat them with a squeeze of lemon on the spot. This is the authentic Versilia.

The port area restaurants along Via Coppino are where local fishermen eat. No concessions to tourism — just perfect cacciucco, fresh-fried anchovies and cold white wine.

The Carnival

The Viareggio Carnival (February) is Italy's greatest — enormous allegorical floats 15 metres high, satirising politicians and global events with Tuscan wit. The artisans who build the floats work year-round in the Cittadella del Carnevale, which is open to visitors. This is serious art and engineering, and the dedication of the carradori (float builders) is remarkable.

Booking the Carnival: Tickets sell out months in advance. The Saturday evening parades are the most spectacular. Stay nearby — the post-parade party continues until dawn.

Eating in Viareggio

Viareggio's food scene is Versilia's most diverse and authentic:

• Seafood: The port restaurants serve the best cacciucco in Italy
• Gelato: The waterfront gelaterie — particularly the historic ones near Piazza Mazzini — are excellent
• Street food: During the Carnival season, vendors sell cenci (fried pastry with icing sugar) on every corner
• Aperitivo: The bars along the promenade do a proper Campari soda, the old-fashioned way

After Dark

Viareggio's nightlife is more authentic than Forte dei Marmi's — fewer tourists, more Italians, real energy. The bars along the port come alive after 11pm. The summer beach club parties (particularly at the northern beach clubs) attract serious DJs from across Italy.
