Versilia's western exposure makes it one of Tuscany's finest stages for a sunset. The palette shifts from gold to rose to deep violet in a matter of minutes — and there are few better ways to appreciate it than with a well-made Negroni in hand.
The lungomare in Viareggio stretches for kilometres of uninterrupted horizon. Bar-terraces facing west get the full evening show; arrive by 7pm to secure a front-row seat, especially on clear summer evenings.
In Forte dei Marmi, the pier (molo) area offers elevated views above the waterline. Several beach clubs keep their bars open well past sunset with DJ sets that segue naturally from aperitivo into pre-dinner cocktails.
For something more intimate, the rooftop and terrace restaurants in Pietrasanta's hilltop quarter catch the last golden light over the Apuan Alps — the mountains framing the sunset from the east create a dramatic double spectacle.
Best months: June and September offer the clearest skies; August is spectacular but crowded. Check weather apps for particolato (haze) warnings — hazy days mute the colour considerably.
