An Active Paradise by the Sea
Versilia is far more than beach and restaurants. The flat coastal plain offers perfect cycling, the Apuan Alps provide epic hiking territory, and the sea offers everything from paddleboarding to sailing. Italy's padel obsession is visible here in every direction.
Cycling the Versilia Plain
The coastal flat between Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi is a cyclist's dream: completely flat, traffic-free cycleways through maritime pine forest, and excellent infrastructure with rental stations throughout. The Via del Mare cycling route connects the major towns in around two hours at a leisurely pace.
The pine forest loop: From Forte dei Marmi, cycle inland through the Parco della Versiliana — a beautiful maritime pine forest with outdoor theatre and trails — then south along the lungomare back to Marina di Pietrasanta. Allow 3 hours, including coffee stops.
Insider tip: E-bikes are widely available for hire and are ideal for the Apuan foothills route from Pietrasanta up to the marble quarries of Seravezza. The views over the coast from 600m elevation are spectacular.
Padel — Italy's Obsession
Padel courts have multiplied across Versilia in the last three years. Most beach clubs have added courts. The best facilities tend to be at the dedicated tennis and padel clubs slightly inland.

- Many clubs offer coaching sessions for beginners and intermediate players
- Early morning (before 9am) courts are cooler and often have last-minute availability
Kitesurfing & Windsurfing
The stretch between Viareggio and Lido di Camaiore benefits from consistent Libeccio winds (south-westerly, typically 15–25 knots) in summer afternoons. This is one of the most popular kitesurfing spots in Italy.
Schools operate from the beach with equipment rental and lessons. Beginners should book a 3-day course for the best progression. Conditions vary — ask the school about forecast before committing.
Golf
The 18-hole Golf Club Versilia at Pietrasanta is the region's flagship course — undulating parkland with mountain views. Less expensive and less crowded than the Tuscan interior courses. Visitors are welcome with handicap certificate.
Sailing from Viareggio
Viareggio has one of the Mediterranean's great boating traditions — home to the famous Viareggio Yacht Show and surrounded by some of Italy's finest yacht builders. Sailing lessons, boat charters and day trips along the coast are available from the marina.
Half-day charter suggestion: Sail south to the Gulf of La Spezia and the beginning of the Cinque Terre coast — visible on a clear day from Forte dei Marmi beach. The approach from the sea to the coloured houses of Manarola is unforgettable.
Hiking the Apuan Alps
The white marble peaks visible from every beach in Versilia are accessible within 30 minutes by car. The Alpi Apuane Regional Park has excellent marked trails from beginner to challenging alpine routes. The view from Monte Altissimo (1589m) — with its working marble quarries and sea views — is one of Tuscany's greatest panoramas.
