Viareggio has a nightlife character entirely its own — louder and more democratic than Forte dei Marmi, rooted in the lungomare promenade culture that stretches back to the Liberty-era palazzi of the early 20th century.
The evening begins on the passeggiata. Locals of all ages circulate the seafront from around 7pm, stopping at terrace bars for Aperol spritzes and cicchetti. The Art Nouveau caffès along Viale Regina Margherita — many unchanged since the 1920s — make spectacular aperitivo venues.
From 10pm the beach clubs flip to club mode. The larger establishments on the northern lungomare have live DJs through the summer months; the music policy leans toward commercial house and Italian pop, with occasional international guest nights. These venues operate until 4am or later.
For something more intimate, the bars around Piazza Shelley in the old town run quieter late-night scenes: craft cocktails, live jazz on weekends, and a largely local crowd.
Carnival season (February): Viareggio is famous across Italy for its Carnevale — one of the country's largest and most elaborate. If your visit falls in winter, this transforms the nightlife picture entirely.
