Pietrasanta has been a centre of marble craft for over five centuries. Michelangelo sourced his Carrara stone here; today, a community of over 60 sculpture studios continues that tradition, attracting international artists who come to work the Apuan stone and bronze-cast their creations.
The Piazza del Duomo is the civic heart of the town — the 14th-century Duomo di San Martino faces the Battistero di San Giovanni e Reparata, with the Torre del Palazzo del Podestà rising behind. The square functions as an open-air gallery; sculpture exhibitions rotate through the public spaces year-round.
The studios are the real draw. Most are open to visitors (knock or ring; hours are informal). Watch marble carvers and bronze patina specialists at work; many pieces are for sale.
