Carrara Marble Quarries

The Carrara marble quarries are one of the most extraordinary spectacles in Italy — and barely known outside specialists and artists. Michelangelo came here in 1497 to personally select marble for his Pietà, and the same mountains that provided marble to Trajan's Column, the Pantheon, and the Duomo di Firenze are still being quarried today, their white and grey-veined walls sliced by diamond-wire saws. The Apuan Alps above Carrara are literally inside-out mountains — cut away from within over 2,000 years of quarrying, leaving a landscape of white marble cliffs, turquoise water-filled quarry lakes, and roads cut into sheer marble faces that feel entirely alien. The marble dust turns everything white, including the roads, plants, and workers. The village of Colonnata, 10km above Carrara, produces the world's most celebrated lardo — cured pork fatback aged in marble basins using secret recipes unchanged for centuries. The combination of visiting quarries and buying lardo in the same journey is one of Italy's great food-and-landscape experiences.
